Following England’s defeat to Italy in the Euro 2020 final, a mural honoring footballer Marcus Rashford was vandalized with graffiti.
The artwork in Manchester’s Withington was vandalized shortly after England lost a penalty shootout on Sunday.
Rashford, along with Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka, missed a penalty in the 3-2 shootout and were mocked on social media following the game.
The prime minister has spoken out against racial taunts directed at the players.
Manchester Police have opened an investigation after officers received a report of vandalism at 02:50 BST.
“Hate crime in any form is utterly unacceptable and not wanted here in our city,” said Ch Supt Paul Savill in an appeal for information.
