Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta side defeated league leaders, Napoli 3-0 in their Serie A clash on Sunday afternoon and Ademola Lookman played a crucial role in the victory.
The Super Eagles forward first half brace was enough to halt Napoli’s early run off to the title and place the Bergamo within 3-points of the top of the table.
Before the clash, Napoli has won four out of their last five matches against Atalanta, with the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona proving a difficult ground for rivals but it took the 14th placed best player in the Ballon d’Or rankings his first SoT in the 1oth minute to expose the defence line of Antonio Conte’s men.
Another 31st minute strike took the Nigerian forward season’s tally to six goals and four assists in eight games so far in the Serie A this season.
It seemed like the perfect time for Nigerians to voice out their provocations on Napoli over the treatment of Victor Osimhen, a player who was ousted from the team after powering them to a league title just two seasons ago.
By virtue of a win, Atalanta have now moved to second on the log pending when Inter Milan plays their game at hand later in the day.
Earlier in the week, the 27-year-old had made the ten-man shortlistas the Confederation of African Football unveiled the 2024 Men’s Player of the Year award.
He will be looking forward to winning as a favourite, having conquered Europe, scoring a hat trick in the 2023/24 Europa League final against Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen to secure Atalanta’s first major title win since 1963.
