Alonso gives positive update on Nigerian striker after back-to-back squad list miss out

Following a thigh injury suffered whilst on international break last month, Bayer Leverkusen’s head coach, Xabi Alonso, has provided a fresh injury update on star striker, Boniface.

Speaking to reporters at the pre-match press conference before his side’s DFB-Pokal clash against Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso provided an injury update on Victor Boniface.

Alonso has been without Boniface’s services since he came back from international duty last month.

The center forward has been missing from the Bayer Leverkusen squad due to a muscle injury he sustained during a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match between the Super Eagles and Rwanda’s Wasps on November 18.

Boniface was not called up for the Bundesliga games against Heidenheim and Union Berlin, he was also not in the traveling squad to Austria for the Champions League meeting with Salzburg.

Alonso refused to put a timeframe on Boniface’s return to action but hinted at the possibility of a complete recovery before the winter break.

The Nigerian has been replaced in the starting lineup by Patrik Schick and the Czech Republic international has delivered, scoring five goals in the last three matches.

In quotes relayed by Liga Insider, Alonso said:

“We have hope. He is on the right track, but it is too early to say when he will be back.”

Before his spell on the sidelines, Boniface was in good form for Bayer Leverkusen, notching eight goals in fifteen appearances across all competitions.

The 23-year-old has been linked with Premier League giants Manchester United in recent days, but nothing is concrete at the moment.
