Arsenal is the frontrunner to sign PSV winger Cody Gakpo, according to sources in the Netherlands. With 16 goals and 14 assists so far this season, the 22-year-old has been PSV’s star attacker. Gakpo signed a contract extension with the Eredivisie club in January, tying him to the club until 2026.
However, it is known that if PSV receives an acceptable offer, Gakpo will be allowed to leave the club this summer.Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Liverpool have all been linked with a move for the Dutch international, but according to VI, Arsenal is in ‘pole position’ to sign the winger.
PSV are apparently demanding at least £35 million for Gakpo, while the deal is expected to exceed the €40 million (£36 million) paid by Napoli for Hirving Lozano in 2019.Gakpo has been a standout on PSV’s left-wing this season, but he has struggled in the centre.
Gakpo is expected to be part of the Netherlands’ World Cup team later this year, according to head coach Louis van Gaal, who also stated that he will not start as a striker in his 3-5-2 formation.
‘He was wounded, so he left when the new system was implemented,’ Van Gaal stated.
‘I’ve requested that he and Jurrien Timber be allowed to assist in the implementation.’ These are guys who, in my opinion, will undoubtedly visit Qatar.
‘He [Gakpo] has played as a striker on a couple of occasions, but he hasn’t always performed well.
‘That’s why I discussed with him where he should play.’ We talked about it. There are some positions where I believe he could play, but it all hinges on his form and fitness, which he frequently lacks. That was also discussed.’
