Arsenal have made their first signing of the summer transfer window by acquiring Kai Havertz from Chelsea for a deal reportedly worth £65m, beating off competition from Bayern Munich.
Despite initial rejections, Arsenal persisted in their pursuit and reached an agreement with their Premier League rivals.
The 24-year-old midfielder leaves Chelsea after scoring a record 32 goals and providing a further 15 assists across 139 games in all competitions.
“It’s super exciting for me to be joining this amazing club and to be part of the Arsenal family,” Havertz told the Arsenal website.
“This club has such a big history, and I hope we can achieve lots of things.”
“The mentality in the Arsenal squad is very high and you can feel that. That was one of the reasons why it has been so hard to play against Arsenal recently.”
“The aim is to win trophies and I’m going to give everything to do that for the supporters and everyone at the club.”
“I’m now looking forward to meeting all the players and the staff when we come back for pre-season.”
After three years at Stamford Bridge, Kai Havertz has left Chelsea following his £62.5m transfer from Bayer Leverkusen.
Chelsea’s disappointing 2022/23 season, finishing 12th and going through multiple managers, prompted the need to raise funds, leading to Havertz’s departure.
Despite being primarily deployed as a striker, the German international only managed nine goals in 47 appearances across all competitions.
