Atletico Madrid’s key player is injured and will miss UCL match

After knocking off Manchester United in the previous round, Manchester City will meet Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday evening. Diego Simeone’s club didn’t receive the matchup they wanted in this round, so they’ll go into the game knowing Pep Guardiola’s team is the favourite to advance.

According to Marca, Atletico Madrid will now have to live without defender Jose Gimenez, who failed a late fitness test to make the travelling team. The 27-year-old was hurt against Alaves and has been in some discomfort,’ though the nature of the injury hasn’t been revealed.

On Sunday morning, Gimenez completed a battery of medical tests in the hopes of being able to face Manchester City. However, those tests did not go as planned for the player or Atletico, and as a result, Uruguay international has been unable to fly to England.

Simeone would be disappointed to lose Gimenez since the defender is an important part of Simeone’s tough Atletico side.
