Barcelona owe Pique and Busquets up to €102 million in wages

Pique and Busquets

Barcelona’s financial struggles in recent years have been well-documented and recent reports now reveal that the club owes wages to both Gerard Pique and Sergio Busquets. The Spanish duo are two of the club’s longest-serving players and reports reveal the debt to be a whopping €102 million.

The Catalan side recently pulled a fourth economic lever by selling 24.5 per cent of Barca Studios to Orpheus Media for a fee of €100 million (£84 million). This enabled the registration of Franck Kessie, Andreas Christensen, Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski, however they have still been unable to register Jules Kounde.

According to Catalan media outlet ARA, Pique and Busquets are owed €52 million and €50 million respectively. Despite reports suggesting that Pique was willing to earn nothing this season, both players have not reached an agreement with the club despite weeks of negotiations.

Barca’s debt is reported to be around the sum of €1 billion. Rafael van der Vaart commented on the issue, saying:

“How on earth can you buy players when you have no money? I find it a disgrace. And Laporta who keeps laughing everywhere with his big head. This man thinks he’s the king. But I think he’s a bit of an idiot.”
