The veteran midfielder went as far as stating that the 21-year-old is better on the ball than Maroune Fellaini.
Amadou Onana, who joined Everton from Lille for €35m in the summer has been one of the few lights for the Merseyside club so far this season. His performances in the Premier League earned him a call up to the Belgium national team. In the match against the Netherlands, he played 75 minutes and his display raised suggestions of him featuring in Belgium’s World Cup squad.
The youngster has been compared to former Everton midfielder Maroune Fellaini, due to similarities in height and style of play. However, Witsel identified an aspect of his game where he is probably better.
“It went well with him,” DH Net report him saying.
“Amadou is strong, generous and a good listener. He makes good runs defensively and he infiltrates well.
“He is a player who will be useful. An air of Fellaini? Yes, but Amadou is better on the ball than Marouane.”
Everton travel to St. Mary’s stadium this weekend to face Southampton. The Toffees currently sit 13th in the league, but are only three points above relegation places.
