The winger came close to moving to the Bundesliga as per reports of interest from Bundesliga champions, Bayern Munich. Now, he will get the chance to play in Germany but in a rival club. Chelsea have inserted an option to recall him in January on the loan deal.
“The move to Germany is really exciting for me and I can play in the Champions League with Bayer 04 Leverkusen”.
“That combination is really attractive and I’m keen to get to know the club, the fans and the Bundesliga. Kai Havertz only had good things to say about it to me in the Chelsea dressing room”, he told the Bayer website.
Speaking to the media, sporting managing director Simon Rolfes said, “We have signed a fast and penetrative winger in Callum Hudson-Odoi. He has everything to be able to help us immediately. Callum has played over 100 games for Chelsea and proven himself in the Premier League as well as in the Champions League. This will give our attacking game another special component. We’re very happy this transfer has gone through.”
Last season, Hudson-Odoi briefly saw a period of consistent play as Covid and injuries temporarily made him one of Tuchel’s best options on the wing. However, he saw little game time after this period, spending extended periods on the bench.
The London club will hope the loan move gives him a solid platform to play at the highest level every week.
