Chelsea eyes swap deal for Real Madrid player to end long standing issue

Chelsea are seriously considering a swap deal with Real Madrid that would solve their long-standing problem in the goalkeeping department.

The Blues are in the market for a new shot-stopper ahead of their Premier League opener Manchester City, with several names being linked with the position.

Robert Sanchez is in line to be Enzo Maresca’s number one for the start of the season, according to The Telegraph, who suggest the Spaniard fits his style of play.

But the club are still keen on adding another option between the sticks. Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal is someone who is of interest, as is Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili.

And now, Spanish publication AS claim Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin could move to Stamford Bridge in a swap deal with Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Kepa, who spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Los Blancos, is willing to take a pay cut to become Thibaut Courtois’ back-up.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are ‘very serious’ about bringing Lunin to the Premier League this summer.

When asked for an update on Chelsea‘s transfer plans after their clash against Wrexham on Wednesday, Maresca said:

“When the transfer window is open, anything can happen for us and for the rest.”

He then was prodded about their interest in Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal.

“We’ll see, we’ll see,” Maresca added. “In this moment we have four goalkeepers. Petrovic is still with us but injured. We will see with the timing.”

“What I can say is Robert did very well tonight and did very well since we started. For sure, the way we want to play, the goalkeeper is very, very important – one of the main positions.”

“And I don’t want to talk about players that are not Chelsea players but I am very happy with Robert.”

With Maresca looking for a goalkeeper who can comfortably play out from the back, it was reported back in May that Chelsea were looking at Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford.
