Chelsea plots Dumfries as Reece James’ backup option in a January transfer swoop

Chelsea may opt to make a move for Inter wingback Denzel Dumfries during the January transfer window.

The Netherlands right-back has caught the interest of many European clubs, with Chelsea among the top clubs that have kept a close eye on him for a very long time.

With the English team currently lacking in defensive power, particularly in the absence of injured wingbacks Reece James and Ben Chilwell, Graham Potter has reportedly reignited the club’s interest in the Holland international as they look for a deputy to cover for the Englishman who recently signed a new six-year deal at the club, penning a contract until 2028.

TuttoMercatoWeb is reporting that Graham Potter considers the Dutchman a major target for his side in a January swoop which could require the blues cough up at least £30million.

However, according to Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter Milan are prepared to request nothing less than £50million in a bid to ward off interest, but will be ready to sell him off when a much appreciable bid is offered for him.

In James’ absence, the Blues boss has deployed the likes of Cesar Azpilicueta, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Raheem Sterling as the club’s only viable senior options to cover the right wing-back position. and in that time have only won one in seven games, losing four of those and drawing the other two.

The signing of Denzel Dumfries will be one to look forward to as Todd Boehly completes the optimum takeover of the club with a sporting director set to be announced in the coming days.
