Chuba Akpom Set for Championship Loan After Ajax Exit Talks

Nigerian striker Chuba Akpom is reportedly close to sealing a loan move to Sky Bet Championship side Birmingham City, according to multiple sources.

The 29-year-old forward is expected to leave Dutch giants Ajax this summer after struggling for game time. Akpom fell down the pecking order in Amsterdam and spent the second half of last season on loan at Lille in France.

At Lille, he registered three goals and one assist in 16 appearances. Although his stint in Ligue 1 was short, Akpom showed flashes of his attacking quality.

Now, Birmingham City have emerged as frontrunners to secure his services for the 2025/26 campaign as they look to add firepower to their promotion push.Akpom joined Ajax in 2023 following a phenomenal season with Middlesbrough, where he finished as the Sky Bet Championship top scorer with 28 goals in 40 games. He was also named the Championship Player of the Season, cementing his status as one of the most lethal strikers in the division.

Despite that form, his move to the Eredivisie didn’t go as planned, and a return to England now appears likely.

With Birmingham eager to compete for a playoff spot, Akpom’s proven Championship experience could provide the spark they need in front of goal.

The move is expected to be finalized in the coming days, with personal terms and medical checks likely to follow swiftly.
