Women’s Euro finals watched by record 17.4 million

The Lionesses’ victory over Germany in the Euro 2022 final game received a record 17.4 million viewers on the BBC, making it the most-watched women’s football match in UK history.

The 2-1 extra-time victory for England makes it the most watched television program in the UK so far this year.

5.9 million people watched the game live on BBC iPlayer as well as on the network’s Sport website and mobile app.
In Germany, the match was viewed by more than 18 million people.
In contrast, 1.4 million people watched in 2009 when the England women advanced to the final.

A record 87,192 people watched the final live at Wembley Stadium.

“We are incredibly proud to have championed women’s football and are thrilled we were able to bring such a special sporting moment to the public,” BBC director-general Tim Davie said.

“This was the most-watched women’s football game on UK television of all-time and the most-watched programme in 2022 so far – and deservedly so. Everyone at the BBC is delighted at the win and being able to share that with the public.”
