Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong transfer from Barcelona as Erik ten Hag eyes reunion with former Ajax star. Manchester United are planning a big-money deal for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
The Red Devils have already set their sights on the summer transfer market, with only one encounter remaining in the Premier League to round off a disappointing season.
Incoming manager Erik ten Hag will need to make significant changes to the team, with interim manager Ralf Rangnick admitting the club requires “open heart surgery.” With De Jong firmly on United’s radar, it looks that a first signing might be on the way shortly.
Barcelona would like to regain at least the £65 million they invested for de Jong in 2019, and preliminary discussions with United have already begun.
The Netherlands international has been a first-team regular under both Ronald Koeman and Xavi this season, earning 45 appearances. Ten Hag will be familiar with De Jong from their time together at Ajax before the latter joined Barcelona in 2019.
He was part of that side who made it all the way to the Champions League semi-final, before losing to Tottenham.
Speaking to UEFA after the midfielder joined the LaLiga club, Ten Hag said: “He is always calm and always has the solution. He scans so well that he always knows how to go forward.
“You can hardly put him under pressure – that is such a great gift.”
