GW24: Top FPL Captain Picks

Mohammed Salah’s departure to represent Egpyt at the Africa Cup of Nations has had no impact on his status as the most valuable FPL asset this season. Despite missing DGW22 and DGW23, the Egyptian still leads the FPL point scorers list with 177.

However, his absence has provided different captaincy alternatives and removed the somewhat “”boring”” default captain strategy that had been in place prior.

Given the uncertainty surrounding his participation in GW24, the captaincy pool is brimming with possibilities.

KDB vs Bre (H): The Manchester City star has recovered from an injury-plagued start to the season. In City’s last seven Premier League games, he has only blanked twice, playing 90 minutes in five of them, including two double-digit returns. KDB’s points return from GW17 onwards is 16, 3, 7, 8, 2, 11, 8, and he has an excellent chance to haul against Brentford, who have lost four of their previous five games.

Diogo Jota vs. Lei (H): Diogo Jota has been a frustrating FPL asset. Despite his potential, underlying stats, and ability, he has only returned double-digits twice this season. With Salah and Mane having just returned from the African Cup of Nations, and Leicester City having lost their previous three matches in all competitions, this could be a good opportunity for Jota to cash in on his XG stats.

Kane vs Sou (H): Ever since his days at Milwall, Harry Kane has had fantastic days against the Saints. During the 17/18 season, he had a six-game PL scoring streak against them, including a hat-trick in a 5 – 2 Wembley triumph. In GW2 of last season, he contributed four assists and scored one as Tottenham ran riot. Despite worries about his form, he stands a decent chance of adding to his amazing tally of 17 goals in 13 Premier League appearances.

Cancelo vs Brentford (H): The defender has six double-digit returns this season, and he has a decent chance of adding to that total against Brentford. City has a strong chance of keeping a clean sheet in this game, and Cancelo’s ability to provide assists and goals when needed makes him a solid GW24 captaincy option.

Trent Alexander-Arnold vs. Lei (H): This season, Trent Alexander-Arnold is a man on fire with seven double-digit returns and a total of 144 points (second most behind Salah). Trent might be the man who provides the goods for Liverpool against the team he scored 24 points against in the 19/20 season. He has as good a chance as any of the other players on the list to deliver.

Son vs Sou (H): Son Heung-Min will remember GW2 of the 20/21 season, when he scored four times against Southampton and earned 24 points. In just 12 outings versus the Saints, he has 13 goal contributions and will want to add to that total. His recent comeback from injury though, raises questions about his sharpness.
