Former Arsenal striker and BBC Sports pundit Ian Wright has dismissed claims that Darwin Nunez needs to bulk up physically after his frustrations with Joachim Andersen reached a boiling point at Anfield on Monday night.
The Uruguayan was handed a red card on his home debut, whilst Liverpool were trailing Crystal Palace 1-0, but Luis Diaz’s outstanding performance helped the Reds salvage a vital point.
In the aftermath of the match, fans criticized his burst up by saying he needs to “toughen up” and “bulk up” but Wright strongly countered these claims on an episode of the Ringer FC podcast which he hosts.
“I was reading a couple of comments that said he needs to bulk up, he needs to get in the gym. He doesn’t actually need to do it,” said Wright.
“Of course, he’ll need to get a bit more physical in respects of backing in and challenges because like we’ve seen, he’s great in the air, he’s got great pace.”
“I personally thought his link-up play last night while watching him, there were opportunities for Robertson to pass into him and people to pass into him into that lane where you need him to make the move, link the play.”
“It was one of those games for him where you could just see the frustration building.” He continued.
Although Nunez has apologized to Liverpool fans the following night on his Instagram page and promises he’ll be back better, many see this as a physical issue considering how well built and physical he looks.
Darwin Nunez will now miss Liverpool’s next three league games and is most likely to make his return in the match against Everton.
