The German forward was the most impressive player for the Blues as they secured a hard-fought 3-1 victory over 10-man Saints.
Trevor Chalobah continued his impressive goal-scoring with a diving header in the 9th minute to give Chelsea the lead. Ben Chilwell’s corner-kick was flicked by Ruben Loftus-Cheek who got a rare start before Chalobah put in the finishing touch. At that point, a routine victory seemed on the cards.
Timo Werner thought he had extended Chelsea’s lead, only to be undone by an extended VAR review, where Azpilicueta was adjudged to have fouled a player in the build-up.
Chelsea continued to dominate proceedings, but could not find the finishing touch and Romelu Lukaku cut an isolated figure up front as he was starved of proper service.
Just around the hour mark, Chelsea loanee, Tino Livramento raced into the 18-yard box and was tripped by Chilwell. A penalty was awarded and James Ward-Prowse won the mind games against Mendy, sending him the wrong way, and slotting the ball into the net.
Ward-Prowse will however play just 15 minutes more as he was shown a red card for a reckless tackle on substitute Jorginho. Thereafter, the floodgates opened.
Cesar Azpilicueta provided two assists in the final five minutes for Werner and Chilwell respectively, thereby sending Chelsea top with 16 points pending the result of the match between Liverpool and Manchester City later on Sunday.
