Issa Hayatou, a towering figure in African football, has passed away on Thursday, August 8, 2024, just one day before his 78th birthday.

Hayatou, from Cameroon, was a transformative leader in the sport, serving as the president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for nearly three decades, from 1988 to 2017.

CAF has paid tribute to Issa Hayatou, honoring him as a “great leader” who devoted his life to advancing football across Africa. His impact resonated globally, with tributes flooding in from around the world, recognizing his significant contributions to the sport.

Under Hayatou’s visionary leadership, African football soared to new heights. He played a crucial role in increasing the number of African teams at the FIFA World Cup from two to five. His landmark achievement came when he secured the 2010 World Cup for South Africa, marking the first time an African nation hosted the prestigious tournament.

Hayatou’s influence extended beyond CAF. He served as FIFA‘s senior vice president for multiple terms and stepped in as interim president during a critical period. Additionally, he was an honorary member of the International Olympic Committee, further showcasing his impact on global sports.
