Lecce closing in on deal for Barca’s Samuel Umtiti

Gianluca Di Marzio has reported that talks are advancing between Lecce and Barcelona over a deal that will see French defender Samuel Umtiti loaned out to the Apulians.

Umtiti’s salary will be paid in full by Barcelona, but the two clubs are still debating add-ons that would depend on how often the center-back would appear in matches.

Umtiti has seen injury hamper his time at Barcelona after battling through a knee issue to help France in the 2018 World Cup, and recently saw his contract renewed to 2026 but with reduced wages.

The defender made just one league appearance in the 2021-22 campaign, and he was widely expected to leave the Catalan giants this summer. A move to Rennes emerged as a possibility until fitness concerns halted the deal, while the emergence of Castello Lukeba at Lyon ruled out a move to his former club.

According to reports, Umtiti will fly to Lecce this Wednesday in an attempt to complete his loan move to the newly promoted side.
