Trent Alexander-Arnold suffered a hamstring injury in Liverpool's 2-0 win against Aston Villa on Saturday, meaning that he's likely to miss England's Nations League doubler-header next week
Trent Alexander-Arnold hobbled off feeling his hamstring in the 25th minute of Saturday’s resounding 2-0 win which put the Reds five points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
Post-match, Liverpool manager Arne Slot admitted that he didn’t think that the 26-year-old would be available for England’s two fixtures in the Nations League next week.
Although Liverpool are yet to receive the results of his scan, sources close to Alexander-Arnold are confident that he isn’t facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines. The Athletic also report that Liverpool are hopeful his prompt substitution helped limit any damage done to his hamstring.
The right-back has been an ever present in Slot’s starting line-up for Premier League and Champions League game this season, despite taking pain-killing injections over the past few weeks. Alexander-Arnold suffered a side strain when England beat Finland 3-1 last month and is yet to fully recover.
He’s now set to be withdrawn from Lee Carsley’s squad for England’s double-header away to Greece (Thursday) and at home to the Republic of Ireland (Sunday).
Speaking after Liverpool’s victory courtesy of goals from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah in the second half, Slot told TNT Sport when asked about Alexander-Arnold’s injury:
“It is difficult to say how serious it is but it is always serious if a player goes out in the first half.”
“Not because I didn’t like him but he asked for it himself, he asked for it because he felt something. So that is first of all not a good sign. It is always difficult so close after the game to tell you exactly what it is but let’s wait and see. I would be surprised if we will see him playing for the England national team this week but hopefully he can.”
Alexander-Arnold has made the right-back position his own for England since Carsley’s appointment as interim manager, starting all four of his games in charge, chipping in with one goal and one assist.
He could be joined by Arsenal duo Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice in missing next week’s fixtures, after Mikel Arteta revealed to Sky Sports following Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea:
“They don’t look very good. I don’t know [if their injuries are long-term]. They both couldn’t finish the game, so not good.”
