Manchester United could sign James Maddison this summer

According to reports, Manchester United have expressed their interest in signing Leicester City midfielder James Maddison who has only one year left on his contract.

Maddison has indicated that he will not be signing a new contract with the Foxes and the club is willing to sell him even if they avoid relegation.

Newcastle have also shown interest in him over the past two transfer windows and Tottenham are also interested in his abilities.

The creative midfielder has scored 9 goals and provided 7 assists in 25 Premier League appearances this season.

Leicester are said to be looking for a transfer fee between £45m-£60m for Maddison, depending on whether they remain in the Premier League. Despite United’s priority being to sign a top center-forward, Ten Hag reportedly wants to alleviate the creative burden on Bruno Fernandes by adding Maddison to the squad.

Leicester City boss Dean Smith spoke about the England international’s abilities in his pre-match press conference.

“I think they are different types of players but they both know they’ve got ability and want to push themselves to become the best,” said Smith.

“I think when you’ve got players that have that personality and character they push you as coaches and you want to go and help them become better players. James seems to have that as well.

“He’s always looking to see what he can do better. He’s really engaging in the meetings we have and tactical meetings, and very vocal as well. I can see that similarity (with Grealish) of wanting to push himself.

“I’m liking what I’m seeing in training so far and he’s not disappointed in the games either. All the players are really focused and James is certainly one of them.”

Maddison has shown tactical versatility over the last 18 months by playing on the left wing and in deeper midfield positions.
