Fletcher’s New Role at Old Trafford

Manchester United have confirmed that club legend Darren Fletcher will now serve as head coach of the Under-18 team, stepping down from his first-team coaching duties under new manager Ruben Amorim.

The 41-year-old Scot, who made over 340 appearances for the Red Devils, begins this new chapter immediately, leading the youth squad’s pre-season preparations in Herzogenaurach, Germany, followed by a friendly clash with Queens Park Rangers at Carrington.

A True Manchester United Legend

Fletcher is one of the most decorated players to emerge from the United Academy, having won:

5 Premier League titles
2 League Cups
1 FA Cup
1 UEFA Champions League
1 FIFA Club World Cup

Since returning to the club in 2021 in a technical and coaching capacity, Fletcher has been a key link between the first team and the academy setup.

Fletcher Speaks on His Excitement

The former midfielder shared his enthusiasm for the new challenge:

“I am really excited to take on this new role and increase my responsibility to directly develop our young players. I’m looking forward to working with such a talented age group, helping them reach their potential and prepare for careers at the highest level possible.”

His appointment reflects United’s renewed focus on developing homegrown talents, a core philosophy of the club’s history.

Amorim’s Backroom Reshuffle Continues

Under new manager Ruben Amorim, Manchester United are restructuring their coaching staff. Fletcher’s move to the academy will allow Amorim to bring in his preferred tactical assistants while maintaining Fletcher’s experience in nurturing future stars.

Meanwhile, United’s transfer plans remain active:

  • Talks continue for Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo, though negotiations have stalled.

  • The Red Devils have already signed Matheus Cunha this summer.

  • A new goalkeeper signing is also in the pipeline.
