The match got off to a lively start with Mbappe threatening twice in the opening minutes, but they quickly fell into a lull and were punished midway through the half.
Maccabi Haifa player, Dolev Haziza whipped a perfect cross for Chery, who stretched out his leg to beat Gianluigi Donnarumma and put the hosts ahead.
PSG had struggled to find their rhythm but it was Mbappe who in the 37th-minute, outran two defenders in the area and sent in a cross that was diverted into the path of Messi, who subsequently scored from close range to tie the score at 1-1.
Messi then returned the favour to the French forward midway through the second half. Mbappe pounced on Messi’s through ball and scored the game-winning goal with his customary perfection inside the far corner.
With two minutes remaining on the clock, Neymar blasted home a low shot after catching a long pass from Marco Veratti to secure the win for the French club.
Mbappe, however, speaking to the media after the match admitted his team’s performance was far from perfect.
“The pitch was not great but that’s not an excuse,” Mbappe said. “We made some adjustments after the break and it paid off. But we’ve got to work hard to get results in terms of the way we play because we’ve got some big games coming up.”
Argentina international Messi has now found the back of the net against a record 39 different teams in the Champions League.
