The executive board of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has rejected the choice of Emmanuel Amuneke as the coach of the Super Eagles, according to reports.
Amuneke was the leading favorite for the job after an endorsement from the minister for sports senator John Enoh, but following a meeting among the executive chambers of the NFF, they have insisted on hiring Finidi George, who is the current interim coach of the team.
Their original choice as recommended by the technical committee of the federation was a foreign coach, but plans were halted after the minister declared the ministry wouldn’t endorse the wage bill of a foreign coach.
This therefore made the NFF approach the decision by hiring an interim coach in person of Finidi George to guide the Super Eagles during the international friendlies.
During a chat with a source, it was discovered the NFF is not in favor of the minister’s decision to endorse Amuneke as the leading coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria and would prefer Finidi George who is already appointed as interim.
“Amuneke can’t be the coach of the Super Eagles with the way things are going. His choice was put forward and we rejected it. Nobody can force us into appointing a coach because if the coach fails its on us,” the source said.
“I don’t know of it is Finidi George but it will definitely be a Nigerian coach and not Amuneke. However, Finidi will be in the setup and probably Daniel Amokachi as one of the assistants. It’s over and Nigerians will know shortly,” the source concluded.
