NPFL Chairman Declares Nigerian Referees Among Best in the World

NPFL will see an improved officiating from Nigerian Referees next season

Nigerian Referees Rated Among the Best in the World by NPFL Chairman Elegbeleye

Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) chairman, Otunba Gbenga Elegbeleye, has boldly declared that Nigerian referees are among the best in the world, citing their impressive performances in both domestic league fixtures and continental tournaments during the 2024/25 football season.

Elegbeleye made this assertion during a review of the NPFL campaign, highlighting the consistency, fairness, and professionalism shown by match officials throughout the season.

“I’ve travelled around the world and witnessed some shocking officiating decisions—something you hardly see in the NPFL,” said Elegbeleye.
“That’s why I can confidently say our referees are among the best globally.”

Continental Recognition for Nigerian Referees

Elegbeleye emphasized that this growing credibility is not just talk, but backed by real progress at the international level. Nigerian referees have increasingly been trusted with CAF assignments, including major continental events.

One referee officiated at the CAF U-20 Championship in Egypt, while another has already been shortlisted for the 2025 WAFCON—clear indicators of Nigeria’s rising profile in African officiating.

“This shows clear progress,” Elegbeleye said. “It’s a testament to the impact of rigorous training and the growing professionalism of our officials.”

Commitment to Continuous Improvement

While praising current standards, Elegbeleye acknowledged that ongoing training and retraining programs remain essential to sustaining growth. He urged stakeholders not to rest on their laurels but to build on the momentum heading into the 2025/26 NPFL season.

He also called on the media to play a balanced role: celebrating top officiating performances while constructively addressing any lapses.

“We need to spotlight referees who get it right and hold those accountable who don’t. That’s how we grow,” he added.

Positive Signs for Nigerian Football’s Future

The endorsement from the NPFL board chairman is part of a wider push to improve all aspects of Nigerian football—from clubs to players and now, crucially, referees. As the NPFL prepares for a new season under stricter regulations (including the “no lights, no home games” directive), strong officiating will be a key pillar in enhancing the league’s credibility and entertainment value.

The message is clear: Nigerian referees are not only holding their own on the pitch—they’re setting the standard.
