Txiki Begiristain, the director of football at Manchester City, expressed admiration for the influential Ilkay Gundogan as the expected move of the midfielder to Barcelona was officially confirmed.
Despite being offered an opportunity to remain at City, the triumphant team captain opted to join Barcelona on a free transfer. The Catalan club has set his buyout clause at €400 million. Gundogan is anticipated to sign with them until 2025, following the expiration of his current contract.
As Pep Guardiola’s initial signing in July 2016, Gundogan bid farewell in remarkable fashion. He secured the Champions League title earlier this month with a victory over Inter Milan in his 304th and final appearance.
“Ilkay has been a wonderful servant for Manchester City, and he leaves our club on a very special high having captained us to a historic treble,” said Begiristain.

In seven years at Manchester City, Gundogan won five Premier League titles and two FA Cups, four League Cups and the UEFA Champions League.
