Reece James agrees new Chelsea deal

Reece James has agreed terms on a new long-term contract which will make him the highest-paid defender in Chelsea’s history.

James is expected to officially sign the multi-year contract within the next few days and commit his future to the club.

The Athletic revealed on Thursday that the club’s new owners had begun negotiations with James as well as midfielder Mason Mount.

Talks with James have progressed at a rapid rate this week and the 22-year-old is going to be handsomely rewarded by the club for his impressive rise in the game.

The England international is one of the lowest-paid players at the club having signed his last deal, which took him up to 2025, in his debut season as a member of the first team in January 2020.

But he is now regarded as one of the best right-backs in the world, let alone the Premier League. He can also play in central defence, on the left flank and in midfield.

Such is his progress, Manchester City and Real Madrid are believed to have put him on their wishlist to sign in the future.

But the Todd Boehly-Clearlake consortium have acted quickly to make sure he will stay at Chelsea for several more seasons.

It is understood he has been handed a massive pay rise which will now make him one of the biggest earners at the club.

Having progressed through the academy from the age of six, James is a huge fans’ favourite at Stamford Bridge and the news will be well received.

It is also another statement of intent from Boehly-Clearlake, who have just set a new club record for transfer expenditure in one window.

Chelsea have spent in excess of £250million to sign several top players, including Raheem Sterling, Wesley Fofana and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
