Ross Barkley signs for Nice after leaving Chelsea

Nice announced the signing of Ross Barkley ahead of their match against Monaco, after terminating his contract at Chelsea.

The 28-year-old moved to Chelsea in 2017 after spending a significant amount of time at his formative club Everton, but his playing time dropped off significantly starting in 2020, which led to a loan stint at Aston Villa. Having only made six Premier League appearances last season, in which he scored two goals, his contract was terminated this summer.

In total he scored 12 times in 100 games for Chelsea.

Barkley will wear the number eleven shirt, which was left vacant by the departure of striker Amine Gouiri for Rennes, in a deal that saw Gaëtan Laborde go the other way.

Nice have seen their late-summer business focus on signing players with Premier League experience in the wake of Iain Moody’s arrival, with the likes of Aaron Ramsey and Kasper Schmeichel having also joined. Left-back Joe Bryan was also signed on a loan deal from Fulham.

Barkley will hope the move to Nice will enable him to get regular playing time and consistent performances.
