Sponsors Secure Funding for New Super Eagles Foreign Coach Amid 2026 World Cup Qualifying Struggles

Bruno Labbadia - Failed to reach agreement with NFF in August

Super Eagles Set for New Foreign Coach as Sponsors Step In to Fund Salary

BALLGISTNigeria can exclusively reveal that at least two sponsors have now agreed to cover the salary of a new foreign coach for the Super Eagles, paving the way for a critical managerial appointment.

According to inside sources, one of the sponsors is an emerging bank showing growing interest in Nigerian football.

“At least two sponsors have agreed to pay for the new foreign coach,” a top official told BALLGISTNigeria. “This agreement will soon be formalized.”

The inability to fund salaries has long delayed the appointment of a foreign coach. Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro, the Eagles’ last foreign coach, faced months of unpaid wages before the Federal Government stepped in with a special intervention fund.

Earlier this year, NFF president Ibrahim Gusau confirmed discussions with sponsors to address the funding gap, a process that now appears to be bearing fruit.

In June, the NFF publicly committed to hiring a foreign coach. However, attempts to sign German coach Bruno Labbadia in August fell apart over contractual disagreements.

In the interim, Augustine Eguavoen took charge and guided the team to qualify for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco. Despite this success, the NFF has emphasized the need for a foreign coach to stabilize the team ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The Super Eagles’ World Cup qualification campaign has been underwhelming. Nigeria currently sits second from bottom in their group with three points from four matches, trailing Rwanda, South Africa, and Benin by four points.

Nigeria’s next qualifier will be a crucial away fixture against Rwanda in March 2025. Fans are hopeful that the appointment of a new foreign coach, backed by fresh sponsorship, will turn their fortunes around.
