Super Falcons 0-0 Algeria: Nigeria Book WAFCON Quarterfinal Clash With Zambia
The Super Falcons of Nigeria are through to the quarterfinals of the2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a goalless draw against Algeria in their final Group B match on Sunday, July 13, in Casablanca, Morocco.
Despite resting several key players, the Falcons did enough to finish top of the group and will now face Zambia in the quarterfinals.
Madugu Rotates Squad as Oshoala, Alozie Sit Out
Head coach Justine Madugu made eight changes to the starting lineup, opting to rest top stars Asisat Oshoala, Michelle Alozie, and Ashleigh Plumptre to keep them fresh for the knockout rounds.
Chinwendu Ihezuo, who had scored in both previous group games, was given her first start up front. She led the attack alongside Ifeoma Onumonu and Francisca Ordega. New faces Sikiratu Isah, Miracle Usani, and Shukurat Oladipo made their WAFCON debuts in defense.
Despite a dominant performance that saw Nigeria produce 24 shots, they could not find the back of the net as Algeria defended in numbers.
Match Summary
The Falcons had most of the possession and dictated the pace, but a compact Algerian defense frustrated their efforts throughout the game. Ihezuo, who had been clinical in the first two matches, was unable to replicate her scoring form and was later replaced by Rinsola Babajide.
Algeria, needing a draw to progress, were disciplined at the back and succeeded in keeping the nine-time champions at bay.
Group Standings and Knockout Path
With this result, Nigeria finished on seven points, edging Algeria on goal difference to top Group B. In the other group fixture, Botswana defeated Tunisia 2-1 but could only manage third place.
Nigeria’s quarterfinal opponents, Zambia, finished second in their group and will provide a stern test for the Super Falcons when they meet later this week.
Looking Ahead: Can the Falcons Go All the Way?
Nigeria remain unbeaten and have yet to concede a goal in the tournament, a testament to their depth and defensive strength. The upcoming clash with Zambia offers a new challenge, but Madugu’s side is brimming with talent, experience, and ambition.
As the Super Falcons aim for a 10th WAFCON title, all eyes will be on how they handle the pressure in the knockout stages.
