UCL Round of 16: Bayern Munich vs PSG – Match Preview, Team News, Predicted XIs

Bayern Munich vs PSG
Christophe Galtier's place as Paris Saint-Germain manager hangs by a thread as his side travels to face German champions Bayern Munich.

The Bavarians secured an impressive 1 – 0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg and only need to avoid defeat in order to go through to the next round.

Bayern Munich are in the driving seat at the moment and are top of the Bundesliga. In addition, since the 2010/11 season, they have not lost a Champions League tie where they won the first leg.

Paris Saint-Germain on the other hand are on the back of a 4 – 2 win over Nantes in Ligue 1 where they have a healthy lead over second-place Olympique Marseille.

Bayern Munich vs PSG – Team News

Bayern Munich’s head coach, Julian Nagelsmann, faces a dilemma in defense ahead of the second leg of their Champions League tie against Paris Saint-Germain. Benjamin Pavard’s red card in the first leg means he will miss the game, and with Lucas Hernandez still recovering from his ACL injury, Nagelsmann must decide whether to stick with a back three or switch to a back four. If he persists with a back three, he could select Josip Stanisic alongside Dayot Upamecano and Matthijs de Ligt, who all started in the win over Stuttgart. Manuel Neuer and Noussair Mazraoui are also unavailable due to injuries.

Meanwhile, PSG will be without Neymar for the rest of the season as he prepares for ankle surgery, and Presnel Kimpembe is out for the long term due to an Achilles injury. However, Renato Sanches has recovered from his hamstring issue and is available for selection. In addition, Marco Verratti is back from suspension and is likely to replace Warren Zaire-Emery in midfield, despite the youngster’s impressive cameo in the first leg. Furthermore, Kylian Mbappe – who became the French club’s top scorer of all time with his late-goal against Nantes, is set to start after coming off the bench in the first leg.

Sadio Mane, who has been plagued by injuries this season, made a substitute appearance in Bayern’s win over Stuttgart but may have to settle for another substitute outing as Nagelsmann considers Thomas Muller and Leroy Sane for the starting lineup alongside Jamal Musiala in the final third.

PSG’s right-back Achraf Hakimi is facing rape charges, which he denies, but he is free to leave the country and should be available for selection as he battles back from a thigh injury.
