UEFA Europa League: Midtjylland vs Lazio – Match Preview

Midtjylland’s second consecutive UEFA Europa League campaign got off to a disappointing start as they fell to Sturm Graz 1-0, despite playing the final 17 minutes and the extra time with 10 men. Ahead of their first-ever competitive match against Lazio, the reigning Danish cup champions’ performance is similarly unimpressive, having won just once since the beginning of August (D3, L5) and falling to Nordsjaelland last weekend (1-1).

It would be surprising if the hosts were to succeed here considering that they have yet to triumph at the MCH Arena this year (D2, L3) and that Midtjylland has never defeated an Italian opponent (D1, L3). With the exception of qualifiers, Midtjylland has only lost one of its seven home UEL games (W3, D3), however that loss came against Napoli, an Italian team.

Lazio began their UEL campaign in impressive fashion, defeating Feyenoord 4-2 after scoring three goals in the first 30 minutes of a competitive match for the first time since February 2020. The team of Maurizio Sarri followed that up with their second clean sheet of the year as they defeated Verona 2-0 on Sunday to earn their first straight victories of 2022–23.

After three straight home games, Lazio travels to Denmark looking for their first away win of the season (D2). However, with just one win in their previous 13 away European games (D4, L8), obtaining another road win on the UEL stage may not be as simple as it first appears.

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Midtjylland’s joint-top scorer this season, Gustav Isaksen, has scored each of his four goals this term before the hour mark. In-form Luis Alberto netted the second fastest goal for Lazio in the UEL just after 183 seconds last week and rounded off the scoring in their latest domestic victory.
