According to Qatar, the stadium will be completely dismantled after the FIFA World Cup and shipped to countries in need of infrastructure.
One of the seven stadiums built by Qatar for the FIFA World Cup will be demolished after the event. That’s what the games’ organizers said about Doha’s Stadium 974.
The stadium is a port-side structure with over 40,000 seats made partially from recycled shipping containers and steel. The stadium will be completely dismantled after the FIFA World Cup and shipped to countries in need of infrastructure, according to Qatar.
“Designing for disassembly is one of the main principles of sustainable building,” said Karim Elgendy, an associate fellow at the London-based Chatham House think tank, according to Associated Press.
“It allows for the natural restoration of a building site or its reuse for another function,” he said
Stadium 974, named after Qatar’s international dialing code and the number of containers used to build it, is the country’s only non-air-conditioned World Cup venue.
Stadium 974 was designed by Fenwick Iribarren Architects in order to avoid creating a “white elephant,” or a stadium that is left unused or underutilized after the tournament.
Qatar has not specified where or when the dismounted stadium will be relocated after the tournament. According to organizers, the stadium could be repurposed to build another stadium of the same size or multiple smaller stadiums.
