Inter Milan and Argentina forward Lautaro Martinez feels winning the World Cup with the Albiceleste in spite of his below-the-par performances has been “incredible”.
The striker didn’t register a single goal or assist as the tournament came to an end, but he did make a significant contribution in the final match against the Les Blues when Lionel Messi pounced on a rebound effort made by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris from Martinez’s shot.
He has said he is extremely pleased with Argentina’s triumph at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar even if he didn’t quite perform as he’d have hoped to do.
Speaking to Argentine news outlet TyC Sports, via FCInterNews, he was quoted saying, “It’s incredible, we’ve written the history of this country,” he said.
“Personally I’m a little disappointed that I didn’t have the World Cup I wanted to, but I’m happy because this team has shown that anyone who comes on from the bench always gives the answers that are needed,” he added.
“It’s crazy, I’m very happy and grateful to my teammates, to my family.”
The Nerazurrian went into the World Cup with hopes that he could continue in the fine form he’s had all season at Inter Milan. He started the first two games for Lionel Scaloni’s side but was demoted to the bench for the remainder of the tournament.
Having been a reliable source of goals for the Albiceleste throughout qualification for the World Cup in Qatar and at their triumph at the Copa America last summer, the 25-year-old will however feel glorious at this triumph despite his “not-so-many” impact in the competition.
