Newly promoted Bendel Insurance defeated Akwa United 2 - 0 at the Akwa International Stadium, Uyo in the 2022/23 NPFL opener.
Star striker Imade Osarenkhoe opened scoring for the Benin-based side in the 37th minute before Ismael Seriki extended their lead five minutes later.
The home side fought hard for an equalizer but were thwarted by a resilient Bendel Insurance defense.
The Benin Arsenal’s last win in the NPFL was a 1 – 0 win over Sunshine Stars in the 2018/2019 season thanks to a goal from Junior Osaghae.
In fact, the last time they sored twice in an NPFL match was in a 3 – 2 loss to Zamfara United in 2007.
With this win, Bendel Insurance moved up to first place in Pool A of the 23 NPFL table.
Meanwhile, both sides will be preparing for their Matchday Two fixtures as Bendel Insurance take on Plateau United in Benin while Akwa United will visit Enyimba Football Club of Aba.
