Akpom: Unsettled Ajax forward issues ultimatum to new boss Farioli

Ajax forward Chuba Akpom
Chuba Akpom has affirmed his steadfast commitment to football amidst
uncertainties surrounding his future at Ajax.

Chuba Akpom, the Nigerian forward, who joined Ajax in August last year, arrived with an impressive reputation following his pivotal role in Middlesbrough’s journey to the Championship playoffs during the 2022/2023 season.

Akpom’s prolific tally of 28 goals in the English second tier earned him accolades such as the PFA Championship Player’s Player of the Year, EFL Championship Player of the Season, and the Golden Boot.

In 31 Eredivisie and UEFA Europa League appearances for Ajax, Akpom has recorded 14 goals and three assists. Despite these statistics, some sections of the club fanbase have questioned his worthiness to don the club’s iconic red and white colours.

Chuba Akpom: Maybe time to look elsewhere

Speaking to NOS as relayed by Soccernews, Chuba Akpom said, “What I have learned in the course of my career is to just keep focusing on football. If you start thinking about things off the pitch, you get distracted.

“I don’t know if I will still be here next week or at the end of the transfer window, but every day that I come to the club, I train as if I will stay here this season.

“I don’t think I can sit on the bench as a second striker for another year. If I get more involved in the games this year, then I’d like to stay here. If that’s not the case, then maybe it’s time to look further. We’ll see.”

Chuba Akpom had previously been linked with a return to England, with Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace reportedly expressing interest in signing him. However, recent reports suggest that Nottingham Forest have renewed their pursuit of the Ajax forward.

The Tricky Trees are keen on strengthening the depth of their attack. Chris Wood did score 15 goals in all competitions last season, but at 32 years old, his age raises questions. Meanwhile, Taiwo Awoniyi, who also plays for Forest, spent much of last season injured.

In March 2015, Akpom joined Forest on loan from Arsenal, making seven appearances for the club during his loan spell.
