D’Tigress Defeat Mali to Win Record 5th Straight Women’s AfroBasket Title

Nigeria’s D’Tigress have made history again, defeating Mali 78-64 in Sunday’s final to win the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The victory marks a record fifth straight AfroBasket title for the Nigerian women’s team and their seventh overall — further cementing their dominance on the continent.

D’Tigress have now gone 10 years unbeaten at the Women’s AfroBasket tournament.

Mali came out strong, edging the first quarter 26-20. However, Coach Rena Wakama’s side quickly turned the game around, asserting dominance in the remaining three quarters with tight defense and sharp shooting.

The win also earns Nigeria automatic qualification for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin, Germany.

Mali, who were hoping for a second title after their lone triumph in 2007, will now enter the World Cup qualification tournament in March 2026 alongside Senegal and South Sudan.

Amy Okonkwo Named MVP Again

Star forward Amy Okonkwo was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament. This is her second consecutive AfroBasket MVP award, having also claimed the honour in 2023.

Her all-around performance and leadership on the court were vital to Nigeria’s success, showcasing her as one of the top players in African basketball.

With another trophy secured and a World Cup spot booked, D’Tigress continue to inspire and dominate African women’s basketball with style, resilience, and championship mentality.
