The Algerian Football Federation, led by its President, Walid Sadi has withdrawn from the African Best Player Award set to take place tonight in Marakesh, Morocco.
Sadi, turned down the invitation sent by CAF officials to represent Algeria at the awards ceremony later tonight, as he believes fellow countryman Riyad Mahrez deserves a place in the final three for the Best Player award over Achraf Hakimi and Mohamed Salah.
Riyad Mahrez, who won the CAF Award in 2016, has reportedly turned down the chance to also be part of the event in protest. Having won the treble last season with Manchester City, the winger now plies his trade in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ahli.
While it does seem according to many media outlets, that Victor Osimhen is the favourite to clinch the award, many Algerians believe Mahrez making the final three would split the votes evenly across all three nominees.
It is believed Victor Osimhen has arrived in Marakesh, Morocco ahead of tonight’s CAF Awards ceremony.
