The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) is set to announce a new coach for the Super Eagles soon, and it will not be any of the four candidates initially shortlisted for the position, BALLGISTNigeria can exclusively reveal.
On Thursday, the NFF technical committee convened in Abuja, where they screened and endorsed a surprise candidate who will be named the new coach in time for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda next month.
A top source told BALLGISTNigeria:
“The Super Eagles will soon have a new coach. It is not any of the shortlisted coaches (Herve Renard, Eric Chelle, Tom Saintfiet, Steve McClaren). The NFF leadership has been negotiating with another coach, and that is the one who will be appointed.”
“Renard, who won the AFCON with both Cote d’Ivoire and Zambia, was the first choice among the shortlisted candidates. However, his financial demands were too high, leading to a stalemate.”
“On the other hand, the government was uncomfortable with the choices of Chelle and Saintfiet, resulting in their exclusion.”
Further details about the new coach will be revealed soon.
