Cash has always been the main obstacle in hiring former Zambia and Côte d’Ivoire coach Herve Renard, and recent developments have proven this challenge.
BallgistNIGERIA has learned that Renard’s agent presented a monthly salary request of $180,000 to the NFF technical committee. Despite attempts to negotiate, the minimum Renard is willing to accept stands at $1.5 million per year.
Even this reduced figure exceeds the NFF’s budget for a new coach, making an agreement unlikely.
On Tuesday, as Herve Renard left France for a vacation in Senegal, he confirmed what many had suspected. After his French women’s team was eliminated in the Paris Olympics quarterfinals, Renard stated,
“Nigeria cannot pay me.”
His past roles with Saudi Arabia and Morocco have spoiled Renard, and the financial reality for Nigeria remains out of reach. For the deal to happen, Renard would need to take a significant paycut which looks unlikely as of now.
