The Super Falcons of Nigeria remain Africa’s number one women’s team, holding firm in the latest FIFA Women’s World Rankings released by the global football body.

Despite fierce competition on the continent and limited matches during the international window, Nigeria retained their 36th position globally while slightly improving their overall points tally: from 1622 to 1623.

Nigeria Hold Top Spot in Africa

Ranked 36th in March, the Super Falcons have maintained their place in the June update, staying ahead of every other African nation. Although their global position remains unchanged, the nine-time African champions continue to lead the continent in women’s football, proving their consistency and quality.

The Falcons earned their additional ranking point thanks to a solid 2-0 victory over Cameroon in an international friendly earlier this month, one of only a handful of matches played during this ranking window.

Portugal Clash Offers Ranking Boost Opportunity

Up next, the Super Falcons face a crucial test against Portugal on June 23. The European side currently sits 13 places above Nigeria in the global standings but have struggled recently, losing their last four matches in all competitions.

With that in mind, Nigeria will look to capitalize on Portugal’s poor form. A win for the Falcons could significantly narrow the gap between the two sides and potentially push Nigeria higher in the next FIFA release.

Eyes on WAFCON Glory

Beyond the rankings, the upcoming friendly also serves as vital preparation for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), set to kick off next month in Morocco. Nigeria have been drawn in Group B, where they will face Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana.

Their campaign begins on July 6 against Tunisia, and the team is determined to claim a historic tenth WAFCON title. Beating Portugal would not only boost their FIFA ranking; it would also send a strong signal of intent ahead of the continental showdown.

From international dominance to continental ambitions, Nigeria remain Africa’s number one women’s team, and they’re aiming higher with each game.
