Paul Merson Urges Arsenal to Pursue Harry Kane in the Summer Transfer Window

Bayern Munich Forward, Harry Kane

Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has advised the Gunners to target Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane in the summer transfer window. The club faces an ongoing issue with a lack of a proven goalscorer.

Kane, who left English football for Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023 for an initial £82 million. He has quickly established himself as one of Europe’s most prolific forwards. The 31-year-old striker has scored 72 goals in 73 games at the Allianz Arena, earning the European Golden Boot last season.

Arsenal’s Attacking Evolution Under Mikel Arteta

Arsenal, under manager Mikel Arteta, have struggled with consistency in attack. The lack of a clinical goalscorer has been a concern, especially with Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes under threat from Liverpool. Kai Havertz, with nine goals in 21 league games, is currently the Gunners’ top scorer, leaving many surprised the club didn’t sign a forward in January.

Merson has shared his thoughts on Arsenal’s current attacking dilemma, suggesting that Kane could be the solution. He believes that Kane, who has long been linked with a move away from Tottenham Hotspur, might be more inclined to join Arsenal rather than return to Spurs. The former England captain could have a better chance of breaking Alan Shearer’s Premier League goalscoring record of 260 goals with the Gunners.

TRANSFERS BETWEEN ARSENAL AND TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Merson also pointed to Sol Campbell’s decision to switch from Spurs to Arsenal as a precedent, noting that Kane’s pursuit of success could lead him to favor a move to the Emirates over a return to his former club.

“He’s got that clause, hasn’t he? If he wins the league, as he should with Bayern Munich, I think that’s it,” Merson said. “If he thinks he can come back and break Shearer’s record, I don’t see why he would go back to Tottenham. He’d have a much better chance of doing that at Arsenal.”

Interestingly, Kane’s history with Arsenal is well-known. He spent a season at the Gunners’ Hale End academy when he was just eight years old but the club released him in 2002. Former academy coach Liam Brady recalled that they released him due to concerns over his athleticism. Despite this early setback, Kane went on to become one of the North London derby’s most influential figures, becoming the all-time top scorer in the fixture with 14 goals for Spurs.

If the Gunners are to challenge for major titles, signing a player of Harry Kane’s caliber could prove crucial.
