Pep Guardiola says Haaland and Alvarez can play together

Manchester City boss believes Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez can work as twin strikers to help break down stubborn defenses.

The pair were both on the field at the end of City’s 1-1 draw with Everton on Saturday.

It was Alvarez’s first minutes since his incredible World Cup performance, in which he scored four goals to help Argentina end a 36-year drought.

Guardiola says that playing Alvarez alongside Haaland against teams whose priority is to stop City from scoring is an option, but that he must also consider his team’s creativity.

“In the last minutes [against Everton] we need people with a sense of goal, to go to the box but even with that it’s not easy and that’s why he played,” the City boss said.

“He rested a week or 10 days it’s not much after the World Cup final”.

“We have two strikers to score goals but to create these chances you have to make the process. And in the process, sometimes you need other types of players to create these chances”.

“But of course they can play together, especially against five at the back – that can happen.”

Guardiola will require his entire squad between now and the end of the season, with games coming thick and fast after the World Cup break.
