Kalvin Phillips provides Declan Rice fitness update

Declan Rice fitness update
Kalvin Phillips has revealed that Declan Rice has returned to training and is fit for England's quarter-final match with France.

Declan Rice missed a training session earlier in the week due to illness, but he appears to be ready for the crunch encounter.

Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips is Rice’s natural replacement should the latter be passed unfit.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Phillips said:

“I believe Dec is fit, he’s back in training and he felt fine.

“If all goes wrong, and Dec wouldn’t be fit then obviously I’ll do my best to complete the 90 minutes.”

Phillips – who was key to England’s run to the final of Euro 2020 has found game time limited during the 2022 World Cup. This is partly due to injuries, limited minutes at Manchester City, and the emergence of Jude Bellingham.

Speaking on his injury, Phillips said:

“I’m enjoying it, having loads of fun, obviously I’m not playing as much which can be frustrating,’ he said. But when you look at the players who are playing in front of me and how well they’re playing, I can’t really argue.

“I’ve just got to keep working hard, getting fitter and fitter throughout. When I come on try and make that impact and be as solid as I possibly can to help the team.

“I want to play as many minutes as possible. Regardless if I’m playing or Dec is playing, we both know it’s whatever we can do for the team then we’ll do it.

“If one’s not able to do that, the other will do their best to do so.”
