Arsenal face Liverpool in mouthwatering FA Cup third round draw

Arsenal and Liverpool will square off at the Emirates on the opening weekend of January in the standout draw of the FA Cup third round.

The two Premier League title challengers will battle it out in north London in what is a nightmare draw for Mikel Arteta and Jurgen Klopp.

Just two points separate the two teams in the top-flight, with both the Gunners and the Reds losing just once in the top flight so far.

Meanwhile, Newcastle will travel to fierce rivals Sunderland in another exciting match-up.

Incredibly, the Magpies have been knocked out in the third round in each of the last three editions.

As for holders Manchester City, Pep Guardiola’s side will face Championship outfit Huddersfield at the Etihad.

Last season’s runners-up Manchester United have been drawn against Wigan at the DW Stadium.

It is the first time the Red Devils have drawn away in a domestic cup match since losing at Leicester in March 2021 – ending a run of 12 consecutive home ties.

National League South side Maidstone United’s reward for securing their first third-round spot since their reformation in 1992 is a home clash against either Stevenage or Port Vale.

The sixth-tier outfit – managed by ex-Wolves star George Elokobi – beat League Two’s Barrow 2-1 on Saturday.

But they aren’t the lowest-ranked team in the competition, with eighth-tier outfit Ramsgate of the Isthmian Football League still in the FA Cup.

And should they overcome AFC Wimbledon on Monday night, they will face Championship giants Ipswich.

In total, there are four all Premier League ties, with Tottenham to welcome Burnley to north London, Crystal Palace to host Everton and Brentford up against Wolves at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea will face Preston at Stamford Bridge, Brighton travel to Stoke, Middlesbrough host Aston Villa as West Ham pit their wits against Bristol City at the London Stadium.

All 32 third round matches of the FA Cup will take place between Friday, January 4 and Monday, January 7.
