Super Eagles and Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen has been named as the Italian Footballers’ Association ‘Footballer of the Year’ for his stellar performances with the Neopolitans last season at the AIC Oscar del Calcio award ceremony that took place on Monday.
Osimhen has been one of the best strikers in the world in the last two years. The 24-year-old Nigeria striker has proved to be a crucial asset for Napoli.
Last season, Osimhen’s 26 goals were instrumental in helping the Partenopei win their first Scudde in 33 years. This feat has also seen the Nigerian nominated for many awards, including the FIFA Best and Balon d’Or.
In total, the Nigerian-born forward scored 31 goals in 39 games for the Serie A team, to help them to their first Scudetto in 33 years.
He also helped a first-ever quarterfinal finish in the UEFA Champions League. The former Lille man also became the first African to win the Capocannoniere.
Osimhen was also included in the Serie team of the year alongside Mike Maignan, Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Kim Min-jae, Andrea Bastoni, Theo Hernández, Stanislav Lobotka, Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Nicolo Barella, Rafael Leão, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
This season, Osimhen started well, but he has struggled with injuries, and the instability at Napoli has not helped issues either. Nonetheless, he would look to return to his best soon enough.
Despite a tougher start to the 2023-24 campaign and recent struggles with injury, Osimhen has continued his impressive goals-per-game ratio, with six from 10 after the 14 games.
