Mohamed Salah’s return to action for Liverpool was marked by a convincing win over Brentford that featured a goal of the month contender from Darwin Nunez
Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez scored a goal of the month contender with an audacious chip against Brentford to set the Reds on their way to a comfortable 4-1 victory over the Bees in Saturday’s Premier League early kick off.
Nunes, who has struggled to find the back of the net recently, shut his critics up with a spectacular goal after 35 minutes to open the scoring for the Reds.
Liverpool doubled their lead through Alexis Mac Allister in the second half after the Argentine was assisted by Mohamed Salah, playing in his first match since leaving AFCON 2023 with a muscle injury.
Mohamed Salah’s day was not over as he then went from provider to scorer, netting Liverpool’s third and putting the result beyond doubt.
Brentford captain Ivan Toney scored a late consolation goal for the Bees, but Liverpool replied with a goal of their own through substitute Cody Gakpo who sealed a 4-1 for the Reds.
Returning AFCON stars
In addition to Liverpool having Salah back, Brentford also welcomed Nigerian midfielder Frank Onyeka and Congolese forward Yoane Wissa back from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Onyeka and Wissa were part of their national teams’ storied runs in Ivory Coast, although both players ended their campaigns in disappointment.
Nigeria and Onyeka fell at the final hurdle, losing to hosts Ivory Coast in the final of the 2023 AFCON, while Wissa’s Congo missed out on a medal after losing the third-place play-off on penalties to South Africa.
