AC Milan ready to open contract talks with Rafael Leao

AC Milan set to open contract talks with Rafael Leao as they hope the player signs a new deal before next month's World Cup

AC Milan is reportedly getting ready to begin their latest round of contract negotiations with Rafael Leao in an effort to stave off interest in the Portuguese forward from most especially Chelsea and Manchester United.

The Blues were interested in signing Leao in the summer, but had their advances rejected, with Milan director Paolo Maldini insisting the Premier League club would need to pay the 23-year-old’s £130m release clause in full if they wanted to sign him.

Chelsea were unwilling to do that, meaning Leao remained in Milan, but his contract is set to expire in 2024.

Although Sporting Director Paolo Maldini already stated in an interview how convinced he is that the player will sign a new deal, the Rossoneri want Leao to quickly commit his long-term future to the club before he heads off to the World Cup with Portugal next month.

As reported by Gianluca di Marzio, the player’s entourage and the Rossoneri met on Tuesday to discuss the terms of a new contract, but the meeting didn’t appear to go well since they are still expected to meet again.

Negotiations though, are expected to be long and difficult, with the Rossoneri expected to present an important offer soon to the Portuguese international.
