Liverpool’s new signing, Cody Gakpo has disclosed that he came close to joining Manchester United before his move to Anfield.
The Dutch international signed for Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in a deal covering over £35 million. He is expected to feature for the club as soon as the paperwork has been completed.
Reports flying around initially suggested Manchester United were the frontrunners for the signature of the 23-year-old midfielder but a timely intervention from Jurgen Klopp proved pivotal in his move to Anfield.
Gakpo revealed to the Mirror that he was close to joining United as well as Leeds – amongst the very few interested clubs – during the summer transfer window.
“It was difficult this summer. It was a very intense period,” said Gakpo.
“I tried to find my peace, but it was difficult”.
“I thought I was going to Manchester United, but in the end it didn’t work out”.
“Leeds United came in. They are a good club, but I asked myself if I should really go there and when you have a lot of doubts, it is not good.”
While Liverpool continue to hunt for a replacement for Senegalese international Sadio Mane, it remains to be seen whether Gakpo’s arrival to the squad is the missing piece needed to return the club back to winning ways.
