International Friendly: Super Eagles loses friendly in Morocco to Mali

Super Eagles lineup vs Equatorial Guinea | Imago

The Super Eagles of Nigeria lost their second friendly game in Morocco after suffering a 2-nil defeat at the hands of the Eagles of Mali, days after a 2-1 victory over Ghana at the same venue.

El Bilal Toure of Atalanta jumped on a horrendous pass from Chidozie Awaziem across the defence of Nigeria to put his side one goal up after 18 minutes. It then stayed that way until the halftime break, then the Super Eagles were forced into a change upon resumption of the game, with Moses Simon making way through an injury suffered.

It was Cyril Dessers who substituted the Nantes man after colliding with an opponent in the box in an attempt to meet a pass from Alex Iwobi.

Minutes later in the game, substitute Dessers almost levelled things after he was put through by Kelechi Iheanacho, but an effort drawn wide off the goalpost would not ensure he put the Super Eagles back in the game.

The Nigerian team was then made to pay for that costly mistake moments later when Kamory Doumba fired home a second for the senior national team of Mali with three minutes down the clock to play for.

The Super Eagles will now regroup in June for the World Cup 2026 qualifiers, where they will take on South Africa in two fixtures. but it is yet to be certain if Finidi George will take full charge of the team or if a new coach will be appointed.
